For the month of October, we will be posting links of interest for the Halloween season. Today is a free online short story called “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates.

This story was first published in Epoch, Fall 1966. The story may be over 50 years old, but it hasn’t lost any of its impact.

A young girl is tempted and wooed by boys one hot summer. Then one day, a boy she doesn’t know knocks at her door while her family isn’t home.

Joyce Carol Oates is a master at making every word count, and she elicits dread as the story progresses. The events in this story are just as relevant now as they were then, maybe even more so.

Read “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” at Celestial Timepiece, a “Joyce Carol Oates Patchwork.”
