Are you ready for the greatest show on earth, as quoted by Mr. Brooks? Young Frankenstein on Broadway is a rip-roaring musical by the weirdly creative Mel Brooks.
The official name of Young Frankenstein on Broadway is “The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein”. It’s based on the comedy movie of 1974 with the same name, directed by Brooks and written by Gene Wilder and Brooks. The musical opened on November 8, 2007 at Hilton Theatre after a month of previews (starting from October 11, 2007) and tryouts in Washington and Seattle.
Story In Brief
The show revolves around a young surgeon, Frederick Frankenstein, who is successful and engaged to a social damsel. His grandfather was a famous mad scientist who owned a castle as well as a laboratory in Transylvania. The young surgeon inherits his grandpa’s queer legacy.
At first, Frankenstein is reluctant to leave his lucrative job as a surgeon and return to the castle to continue with his grandfather’s strange experiments. But, when he reaches the place, he’s drawn towards the weird experiments of bringing the dead to life. Does Frankenstein go back to pursue the life of a surgeon or will he continue with the experiments in castle?
The sets of laboratory are something that the audience has never seen before. Besides, the musical contains terrific dance numbers, one of them being “Puttin on the Ritz.” And how can you forget the line of crazy gang, including the hunchback Igor, the mysterious Frau Blucher, the giant green monster, and ah, the sexy lab assistant Inga! Don’t miss love striking between our dashing surgeon and his sultry lab assistant!
The musical stars Roger Bart as the young Frankenstein, Christopher Fitzgerald as the hunchback Igor, Andrea Martin playing Frau Blucher, Megan Mullally in the role of Elizabeth, Sutton Foster as the sexy Inga, Shuler Hensley as the green monster, and Fred Applegate. The incredible sets have been designed by Robin Wagner; choreography is done by Susan Stroman; and costumes are designed by William Ivey Long.
On December 26, 2007, Decca Broadway had released the original cast album of this musical. It climbed the third position on the Billboard Top Cast Album in the beginning of year 2008. The replacements in the musical for Broadway firm included Beth Leavel playing Frau Blucher, Kelly Sullivan in the role of Inga, Cory English as Igor, and Michele Ragusa playing Elizabeth Benning.
