LOTERIA features one short story for each of the 54 Loteria cards and is now available in both paperback and digital editions. Each of the short stories is based on a Latin American myth, superstition, or folklore. The collection written by Cynthia (cina) Pelayo was compiled during graduate studies and in-person interviews to uncover popular legends within the Hispanic community.
The Mexican board game of Lotería is a game of chance. It is similar to our American bingo. However, in Lotería instead of matching up numbers on a game board, players match up images.
There are 54 cards in the Lotería game, and for this short story collection you will find one unique story per card based on a Latin American myth, folklore, superstition, or belief – with a slant towards the paranormal and horrific. In this deck of cards you will find murderers, ghosts, goblins and ghouls. This collection features creatures and monsters, vampires and werewolves and many of these legends existed in the Americas long before their European counterparts.
Many of these stories have been passed over time throughout the Americas, and many have been passed via word of mouth, just like the tales the Brothers Grimm collected. These are indeed fairy tales, but with a much more terrible little slant.
About The Author: Cynthia (cina) Pelayo grew up in a haunted house with very superstitious parents in Chicago’s northwest side. So, a lifelong fascination with Gothic literature, romantic horror and the macabre seemed fitting. Pelayo holds a genuine curiosity for superstition, folklore and myth. She holds a Bachelor of Art in Journalism from Columbia College, a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communication from Roosevelt University, and a Master of Fine Art in Writing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a member of the Horror Writer’s Association and is also the Publisher/Gravedigger at Burial Day Books. She wears black – most of the time and she stays out of the sun as much as (un)humanly possible.
About Burial Day Books: Burial Day Books is a boutique publisher of supernatural horror.
On burial day a coffin is lowered into the ground, people mourn, and a grave is covered with dirt. Yet, memories remain lingering about around corners, beneath beds, walking among us (or stalking us) as shadowy figures, mists, or whispers. Horror, the truest, purest form of horror is the black and beautiful dance between good and evil. We love the unknown. We fear the unknown. We will bring you the unknown through our literary horror novels and short fictions.
