The Midnight Circus
by Sheldon Woodbury
A rumbling caravan snaked its way down gloomy back roads with its mysteries and horrors shrouded from view, until it was time to clatter to a stop and hoist its tattered black tents that fluttered like ghosts. A haunted a call was unleashed that could only be heard in the slumbering darkness of children’s dreams, followed soon after by the excited padding of their stumbling feet. At the last possible moment before daybreak, the midnight circus rolled off again, snaking away without any sound at all, except for the early morning wail of heart-breaking screams.
