Night Train

by Rick Hipson

Random flashes of life rush by my window and quickly fade away.  Clattering down these tracks, the skin of my past is ripped from my bones and is devoured beneath the flight of my night train.

A whistle screams, jolting me upright.

“Ticket please.”

Digging through empty pockets, I search for a ticket I’ll never find.  I don’t belong here.

Hand upon my shoulder I look up and become bathed in burning laughter. The train crumbles beneath me and gives way to the fiery depths of my sorrow below. Screams fill the void as I fall forever against them.
