Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island
Posted by: | CommentsAmerican history meets fantasy in one of the greatest action-adventure tales of all time, Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island, a newly updated cinematic adaptation of the beloved literary classic, The Mysterious Island (1874), landing on DVD May 29 from Green Apple Entertainment.
Description: As famine and death ravage Richmond, Va., five northern Civil War POWs, including Emmy Award-winner, Pruitt Taylor Vince (AMC’s The Walking Dead, JFK, Drive Angry, Constantine) and Lochlyn Munro (Dead Man on Campus, White Chicks), plan a daring escape by hijacking a hot air balloon. Drifting through the night, they wake to find themselves marooned on a desert island … but they’re not alone.
Littered with wreckage, the island is home to a cast of survivors who have been lost in space and time, including Abby and Jules Fogg (Susie Arbromeit, Battle: Los Angeles, and Gina Holden, Saw 3-D, Alien vs. Predator), two young women from modern times who become stranded while flying over the Bermuda Triangle.
Forced to defend themselves against vicious pirates, terrifying creatures and a volcano that’s ready to blow, they must find a way to survive. Their only hope to escape the island lies with its longest resident, Captain Nemo (W. Morgan Sheppard, Star Trek, Transformers, Gods and Generals). With his help, they craft another plan … But will they make it before the island claims them all forever?
Directed by Mark Sheppard (Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Firefly, Warehouse 13), who makes a cameo appearance as a young Nemo (the adult role portrayed by his real-life father).
Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island is presented in widescreen with an aspect ratio of 16 x 9 (2.35:1) and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound.

Our culture is filled with tales of the walking dead. They’re in our mythology. They’re in our religions. They’re in our comic books. We fear them, we love them, we’re just plain obsessed with them. But we know the zombie apocalypse is just a fairy tale. We know it couldn’t really happen. Could it?

Quebec’s master of horror – Bestselling author, Patrick Senécal, (500,000 books sold) has been conjuring the unimaginable for a loyal following of fearless readers since 1994, when he published his debut novel, 5150 rue des Ormes. He’s since penned dozens of unreasonably gory thrillers and has shaped what homegrown psychological terror looks like on the big screen, thanks to three examples: the Éric Tessier-directed Sur le seuil (2003) and 5150 Elm’s Way (2009), and filmmaker PodZ’s Les 7 Jours du Talion (2010). Yet he remains virtually unknown outside Quebec.

Bram Stoker was born at No 15 Marino Crescent in Clontarf in 1847, while famine raged in Ireland. It would be nice to say that he died in luxury on April 20, 1912 in London, suitably honoured for having created one of the great characters of 19th century literature and 20th century film. But only when Dracula was adapted for film in 1929 did his widow, Florence, enjoy the true benefits of his fame. She used part of the $40,000 film rights to install in her London home the rarest of rare luxuries – a downstairs lavatory, which in gratitude she christened “Room Dracula.” Read more about Stoker…

Monstermatt’s Bad Monster Jokes Vol.2
Posted by: | CommentsMonstermatt Patterson, Kyle Kaczmarczyk and West Neb Books have announced the upcoming Monstermatt’s Bad Monster Jokes Vol.2, slated for a 2012 Halloween release.
This follows up the well-received first volume “bad” monster jokes. Monstermatt’s Bad Monster Jokes Vol.1 collected over 400 gags, puns, and rhymes. Vol.1 showcased monsters, horror films and all sorts of characters and creeps from across the horror genre. Vol.2 will have nearly 500 jokes, picking up where Vol.1 left off, to simultaneously lampoon and honor the obscure and profound elements of the weird world of monsters.
Vol.1 continues to receive great reviews from all over the globe. Vol.1 poked fun at independent films like Basket Case, The Manitou, The Human Centipede and Troma films, while also joking on the classic Universal Monsters and movies.
What can readers expect from the follow up? Vol.2 keeps that theme alive, taking aim at the Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Faces of Death, Trog and many more! Once again, using a formula of rhymes, song parody lyrics, puns and zingers, coupled with insightful and humorous illustrations, the duo of Kaczmarczyk and Patterson hope to keep you grinning, groaning and laughing!
Monstermatt Patterson, dubbed ‘The Man of a Thousand Bad Monster Jokes,’ says, “We wanted to pay tribute to the classics, the b-movies, the grindhouse and obscure films, while making it fun and even educational, for most every age group, from horror novice to professional. We’ve gotten many emails about people getting into horror and or further into it, all because of the jokes and illustrations. There is something for nearly everyone!”
Monstermatt Patterson’s Bad Monster Jokes Vol.2 is slated for release in time for the 2012 Halloween Season.

Graduate creative writing programs have been accused of churning out a great deal of monotonous fiction – think Connecticut divorcées frowning over the fine silver – but McGreevy’s willingness to follow his gut is, in part, what makes his novel an exception: “I went to the Half Price Books on Lamar and saw a short story collection that looked interesting to me called The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. And I’m like, “Oh, this entire book is about f—ing werewolves and things like that, but she’s a very, very literary writer.” And so that, for me, was sort of an epiphany: “Oh, I don’t have to be trying to put myself in a box that I don’t particularly have the talent for.” Read more about Brian McGreevy and his novel, Hemlock Grove…
