Asylum Press Releases Fearless Dawn #2 Preview
Posted by: | CommentsFrank Forte, publisher of Asylum Press, has announced the release of a 4 page preview of the tongue in cheek pulp book Fearless Dawn #2.
The synopsis of issue #2 can be described as this: “Hopped up out of their freakin’ minds on the Combat ‘Power’ drug, Fearless Dawn,(heroine extraordinaire), and Number Seven (her manly love interest) go on a rampage through Helga’s camp. The combat monster versions of Fearless Dawn and Old Number Seven smash a lot of stuff and maim aplenty as they make their exciting escape. Meanwhile, the Syndicate sends in a secret weapon to aid in the rescue.
“Back in February’s Previews there was a book from Asylum Press called Fearless Dawn that went largely unnoticed by fans and retailers. The entire industry went on rolling without giving it a second glance, and like many small press books it nearly slipped into obscurity without reaching the core readers in our hobby. But when a copy of it made its way across my desk, I knew from first glance it was something special that people needed to see,” commented Jim Kuhoric of Diamond Comics Distributors.
“I am excited to bring Fearless Dawn to a full-color series,” says creator Steve Mannion. “This is a dream project and I’m having a blast.”
“We’ll be updating the website and blog on a regular basis so fans can see pencil to ink pages, colors, thumbnails and interact with Steve,” says publisher Frank Forte.
The Publication schedule is as follows. Fearless Dawn:Special Edition #1 (ships November 2009), Fearless Dawn #2 (ships December 2009), Fearless Dawn #3 (ships February 2010), and Fearless Dawn #4 (ships March 2010),

Snyder And King To Write A New Horror Comic Book
Posted by: | CommentsCelebrated short story writer Scott Snyder and artist Rafael Albuquerque will launch a new monthly comic book series from Vertigo in March 2010 with a unique contribution from New York Times bestselling novelist Stephen King. The new ongoing series, American Vampire, will introduce readers to a new breed of vampire – a more muscular and vicious species of vampire with distinctly American characteristics. The series’ first story arc, to be told over the course of five issues, will feature two different stories, one written by Snyder, the other by King.
Snyder’s storyline is one of decadence and deception and Jazz Age glamour. Pearl is an ambitious modern woman with starlet dreams. She frequents Hollywood’s speakeasies and dance-halls searching for her first big break, only to find something far more sinister waiting for her.
King’s story provides the origin of the very first American Vampire: Skinner Sweet, a bank robbing, murdering cowboy of the 1880s. Skinner is stronger and faster than previous vampires; he has rattlesnake fangs and is powered by … the sun?
Following the conclusion of the first story arc, Snyder and Albuquerque will trace Skinner’s bloodline through various decades of American history.
“Getting the chance to re-imagine a classic monster – to invent a whole new mythology and secret history – nothing could be more exciting for me … except getting the chance to do it with Stephen King at Vertigo.I honestly can’t think of any influences more crucial or enduring for me than Vertigo and Stephen King. To have them both involved in American Vampire, along with the amazing RafaelAlbuquerque – this all a dream come true for me!” -Scott Snyder
“I love vampire stories, and the idea of following the dark exploits of a uniquely American vampire really lit up my imagination. The chance to do the origin story-to be “present at the creation” – was a thrill. I owe big thanks to Scott Snyder for letting me share his vision, and sip from his bucket of blood.” -Stephen King
“In a time where vampires are everywhere, Scott and Stephen seem to have done the impossible: An original, inventive and detailed new series. It’s a challenging and exciting project I’m proud to be working on.” -Rafael Albuquerque
“Publishing a series with a fresh take on the vampire mythos would be incredible enough, but adding the talents of Scott Snyder, an exciting new voice in fiction, and Stephen King, the master of horror himself, is beyond awesome. We are thrilled that Vertigo is the home for this special new work, which we’re certain will be a major addition to the timeless and popular appeal of vampire lore everywhere.” -Karen Berger
Bluewater Announces New Horror Comic
Posted by: | CommentsBluewater Productions has announced the upcoming release of Distortions Unlimited this December. Referred to as a unique horror comic that revolves around existing full-scale monster and alien animatronics, the three issue series is based on licensed characters crafted by Distortions Unlimited based in Greeley, CO. Distortions is world-renowned for creating shocking props, masks and animatronics that have been the mainstay of the dark amusement industry for the last 30 years. The company is best known for reproducing the 16 foot queen alien from the film Alien cast from the original molds, as well as designing the stage props for music industry icon Alice Cooper’s Brutal Planet tour.
The first issue of the series delves into the horror unleashed on the earth with the collapse of a mine. The plot was crafted with multiple, intertwining layers that combine fantasy and true-life events ripped from today’s headlines. Local Denver celebrities, Uncle Nasty and Matt Need from Clear Channel’s KBPI and Allana Rizzo from Rocky Mountain Fox Sports Net have lent their likeness to the project.
Crosier will bring a unique look to the books by illustrating with his watershed technique. All covers and interior pages of the series will be created with graphite on wood poplar panels. Crosier’s influence for the series is Dark Horse’s B.P.R.D. 1946. The books will have a high contrast, distressed, organic look.
The creative team will also include veteran inker Peter Palmiotti. Palmiotti has worked for a variety of comic publishers including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Image.

Vampire Apocalypse Series Optioned For Graphic Novel
Posted by: | CommentsPublisher New Baby Productions has announced that a graphic novel adaptation of Derek Gunn’s Vampire Apocalypse novel series is in the works.
“I’m really thrilled with this new direction as I always felt that (Vampire Apocalypse) really lends itself to this format,” stated Gunn. Vampire Apocalypse was published in September 2006, and has been optioned by producer/screenwriter Richard Finney to be a feature film. A script has already been penned by Finney and Franklin Guerrero Jr. Fallout, the third book in the series, will be released this October from Black Death Books.
According to Gunn, “The stories are set in the near future in a world grown insular after a brief war has left the world depleted of resources. Fuel is rationed, states close their borders, communities die, and technology stagnates. As the world struggles to cope with these problems, the vampires come from the shadows and quietly begin to take over community-after-community. They offer power to those who will join them, and death to those who don’t. It doesn’t take long and, after a brutal but brief war, they take control. They use a serum and Thralls to control the population, wall the cities off, and breed humans as stock. The Thralls are humans who have been bitten but have not fully become vampires. They have enhanced speed and strength and guard the vampires during the day when they could be vulnerable.”
“In recent pop culture, vampires have been turned into beings that should be loved. Derek Gunn returns vampires to the blood-thirsty dangerous monsters that they should be,” stated New Baby Publisher Eric Mullarky. “This is the perfect story to launch New Baby into the horror genre.”
This new adaptation will be scripted by CJ Hurtt, an eclectic writer whose work has run the gamut from mainstream to horror to slipstream to political drama. His horror prose has been published in Lighthouse Magazine and Horrorfind.com; and his comic work has been showcased in the political drama One Last Song published by Brainscan Studios. He is the current Fiction Editor of Dark Recesses Magazine.
Assisting on the writing duties will be Gunn, an Irish author whose work has been widely praised on both sides of the Atlantic. His latest novel, The Estuary, was released in June 2009, and has been receiving some solid reviews, including commendations from Fangoria, Flamesrising.com, and Horrornews.net. Gunn is a member of the International Thriller Writers Association and the Horror Writers Association.
Argentinean artist Federico Combi will be providing the art for the graphic novel. Combi fancies himself a “Fine Arts Technician;” an illustrator and artist specialized in multiple concepts and artistic esthetics: fantasy art, pin ups, stories, children’s albums, youth novels, adult novels, paleo art, comics, and storyboards. He has worked for producers on several continents. Mullarky said that “Frederico’s realistic painted style will bring a unique visualization to this project that you will not want to miss.”
Vampire Apocalypse: the Graphic Novel is scheduled for an early 2011 release. A mini-comic preview edition will be available at various conventions during 2010 to start the pre-release marketing. Project updates will be posted on the New Baby Productions
New Baby Productions is an independent comic book publisher formed in 2008 by Eric Mullarky with the intent to self-publish his Elemental Fources series. The follow-up series, Elemental Fources: Brothers in Arms, will be released in 2010.
