Although, as anyone else, I’m more interested in anthologies or collections including brand new stories, I must confess that I do love reprint anthologies featuring previously published material revolving around a similar or a common topic. So much so that I’d be ready to try to do it myself if any publisher should offer me a chance to act as an editor 🙂
Ellen Datlow is, by far, the most famous and prolific editor of horror fiction and the present book is a further, good example of her well known professional ability.
The anthology assembles nineteen tales of horror previously appeared in print and dealing somehow with Lovecraftian themes or atmospheres ( sometimes in a very broad sense).
Among the various tales included in the book, some deserve a special mention.
“Once Seen” by Conrad Williams is an excellent piece of fiction featuring a crime scene photographer and describing his difficulty in dealing with the sad reality.
Ray Cluley’s “Sideways” is an outstanding tale where pilots flying on a high-speed “Arrow” risk their life and their sanity fighting against dangers of unexpected nature.
Norman Partridge provides “Backbite,” an unusual story featuring two brothers involved in an unexpected adventure, while Paul Tremblay contributes “The Note”, an excellent, upsetting tale where a man tries to understand the truth behind the sudden disappearance of his wife.
Gary McMahon’s “Diving Deep” is a claustrophobic nightmare affecting a deep diver.
Enjoy.
