Bram Stoker Award-, ITW Thriller Award-, and Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author Nicholas Kaufmann (General Slocum’s Gold, Chasing The Dragon) has signed a two-book deal with St. Martin’s Press. The first book, Not Dead Yet, is tentatively scheduled for release in the fall of 2013.

Not Dead Yet is the first in a dark, action-packed fantasy series that takes place in contemporary New York City, where crime – and magic – is on the rise. Standing in the thick of this volatile mix is Trent, a man with two very unusual problems. For one thing, his memories are gone, leaving him with no idea what his real name is, where he came from, or why his second problem exists at all. Because Trent can’t die – or rather, he can’t stay dead. Given his line of work as a thief in the employ of a psychotic Brooklyn crime boss named Underwood, Trent finds himself on the business end of more than his share of bullets, yet each time he’s killed he wakes up again a few minutes later completely healed of his wounds. Normally, this wouldn’t be such a problem at all, but his ability comes with a terrible price. Each time he cheats death, someone else must die in his place.

Then Underwood sends him on a job that changes everything Trent has come to believe about what’s real and what’s not. The task seems simple at first: Steal an old, antique box from some squatters in an abandoned warehouse near the West Side Highway. But nothing is what it seems, and Trent soon finds himself stumbling into an age-old struggle between the forces of good and evil, opening his eyes to a secret world that shadows our own, a world where dangerous magic turns people into inhuman monstrosities, where impossible creatures hide in plain sight, and where the line between the living and the dead is never quite clear. And when the mysterious box is opened, Trent discovers he has only twenty-four hours to prevent an ancient, unstoppable force from destroying all of New York City.

The second novel in the series, All The Cities Of The Dead, is tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2014. Both novels will be published in trade paperback through the St. Martin’s Griffin imprint.
