Press Release: September 10, 2019, New York, NY — Shudder, AMC Networks‘ premiere streaming destination for exclusive and original genre entertainment, announced today it will present the streaming debut of TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID, the highly acclaimed genre-bending film from writer/director Issa López this Thursday, September 12. The film will be available for all Shudder members to stream in the U.S., Canada, UK, and Ireland.
A haunting horror fairytale set against the backdrop of Mexico’s devastating drug wars, TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID follows a group of orphaned children armed with three magical wishes, running from the ghosts that haunt them and the cartel that murdered their parents. Filmmaker Issa Lopez creates a world that recalls the early films of Guillermo del Toro, imbued with her own gritty urban spin on magical realism to conjure a wholly unique experience that audiences will not soon forget. The film stars Paulo Lara, Juan Ramón López, Ianis Guerrero, and Hanssel Casillas, and is currently at 96% Fresh with 79 reviews, topping Rotten Tomatoes’ Best Horror Movies of 2019 list.
Guillermo del Toro himself calls TIGERS “…an unsparing blend of fantasy and brutality, innocence and evil. Innovative, compassionate and mesmerizing.”
“There’s a reason tastemakers like Guillermo del Toro, Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman are fans of this amazing film,” said Craig Engler, GM of Shudder. “Issa López has created a wonderful movie that’s beautiful, haunting, scary, and utterly unique, and we’re delighted to bring it exclusively to Shudder members starting Sept. 12.”
Issa López is a Mexican writer and director. She has won several literary awards, including the National Novel Award granted by Mexico’s Institute of Fine Arts and Literature. She penned multiple TV shows, some of them reaching the highest audience ratings in Mexican prime-time TV, and wrote the scripts for eleven film features, three of them produced in Mexico by the Major Hollywood Studios, and two of those directed by herself: EFECTOS SECUNDARIOS (Warner Bros., 2006) and CASI DIVAS (Sony Pictures, 2008). In 2017, López finished her third feature as a director, and tenth as a writer: TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID. López has been selected as one of the 50 Latino Impact Players in Entertainment, by Variety.
TIGERS has collected a total of fifty awards in Film Festivals around the world, three Diosas de Plata (the Mexican equivalent of the Golden Globes), including Best Picture and Best Director, and has received 10 nominations for the Ariel (the Mexican Film Academy Award), of which it won two. Guillermo del Toro has announced that he’ll produce Lopez‘s next film, a haunted western, and Legendary Pictures signed her to write and direct an untitled “supernatural revenge thriller.”
