PICTURE DAY BLUES

by John Boden

“Smile” says the lady behind the camera, all too red lips and big hair.

Sandra smiles, the fake one she keeps for times like these. She straightens her posture, spine popping quietly.

“That’s good. Now, chin up a little, keep smiling,” BigHairRedLips tells her.

The other kids are waiting along the cafeteria wall, for their turn on the plastic chair. She hasn’t been at this school long enough to learn names. She hasn’t been to any school in a long time.

She sits up and holds the cuffs of her sleeves down over her hands.

This hides the rope burns.
