bloodrain

by doung jai

Helena sobbed in the shower as she scrubbed everywhere her husband touched her. The hot water calmed her, yet the bruises remained. Before bed, she prayed to the goddess for peace and strength.

She awoke the next morning to a bloodstorm. For five days and five nights, blood rained down thick and heavy. Cultists called it the end of times; most were afraid.

But the battered and bullied knew, and they rejoiced in the streets. Children splashed in crimson puddles, knowing that those who hurt them were now gone.

Naked, Helena danced in the rain.
