At Tor.com, Suzanne Johnson, who has never read The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, will be correcting the error of her ways and reading the first of the series, The Gunslinger, over the next ten weeks. She invites you to join her as she tries to read meaning into the meaningless and miss monolithic symbols along the way.
“I’ll be posting weekly, talking about it as I read, studiously not reading ahead, and giving you, my own Constant Reader, many opportunities for pointing out my foibles and smirking at my ignorance,” Johnson says in her introduction.
The Gunslinger was originally published in five installments in Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine, with the first installment comprising about a third of the book. Johnson will be reading the 2003 revised, expanded edition rather than the original 1982 book.
Dark Tower reading installments will post every Monday.
At the end of section five, she’ll announce the reading plan for book two in the series, The Drawing of the Three.
Read with her: The Gunslinger
I think this is great idea Suzanne Johnson has. I have all the books in The Dark Tower series and have been planning to start them this year. I read the first two when they were originally published, but hardly remember anything about them. I stopped reading the series with The Wastelands. Anyway, I want to complete the series before Ron Howard’s first movie comes out so I will start reading along with Suzanne, but I’ll also be taking breaks to read other novels as they come out and I get copies of them such as The Wolf’s Hour in limited edition format (I know I’m late in getting this but like most readers I have limited funds in which to buy my books–I should finally receive this within the next seven days or so) and The Five–both of these novels are written by the great Robert R. McCammon with The Five being his newest. I also want to re-read uncut version of The Stand, which will be a long project. Anyway, this is a good time to start reading The Gunslinger, which is a small novel compared to the others in the series. I should have this finished in time for The Wolf’s Hour.
