Park Chan-wook is an original, disciplined filmmaker; his movies feature stunning visuals and outrageous plot turns, but perhaps the key to his success is he still embodies the enthusiasm of a high school movie freak.

For example, it might come as a surprise that the director of a vampire film, “Thirst,” which opens Friday, can’t see horror movies on a theater screen; he has to wait for DVD.

“I want to see Drag Me to Hell,” Park said through a translator while sitting in a suite at the Ritz-Carlton. “As an audience member, I fall for everything the director wants me to fall for – and if it’s scary or intense, the big screen is too much for me.”
