Ray Bradbury died Tuesday night. He was 91. His daughter, Alexandra Bradbury made the announcement. There are currently no additional details.

He wrote mysteries, horror, science fiction, the genres often blurring. But the heart of his stories always revolved around the human spirit.

“What I have always been is a hybrid author,” Bradbury said in 2009. “I am completely in love with movies, and I am completely in love with theater, and I am completely in love with libraries.”

He wrote The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Dandelion Wine, and too many short stories to count. Today’s a great day to pull out one of his collections and remind yourself just how powerful and how human his stories could be.

“The great thing about my life is that everything I’ve done is a result of what I was when I was 12 or 13,” he said in 1982.

Born Ray Douglas Bradbury on Aug. 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Ill., he is survived by his four daughters.
