The writings of Chuck Palahniuk are the focus of a new scholarly work. Sacred and Immoral: On the Writings of Chuck Palahniuk, edited by Jeffrey A. Sartain, offers eleven essays, plumbing the depths of the writings of the author of Fight Club, Diary, Invisible Monsters, Choke, and numerous other works as only academics can.

Though Sacred and Immoral may be a little light in length at only 250 pages, its content promises fairly deep probing. Take Chapter Six: “Brandy, Shannon, Tender, and the Middle Finger: Althusser and Foucault in Palahniuk’s Early Novels”; or Chapter Eleven: “Invisible Carrots and Fainting Fans: Queer Humor and Abject Horror in Guts.”

Sacred and Immoral has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing and will set back interested readers with its textbook $59.95 price. Perhaps not ideal for leisurely beach reading, but it might fit the bill for a cozy companion during this coming winter’s snowstorms.
