The Poe MurdersJames Mascia, a teacher at Westlake High School in Waldorf, MD has written a graphic novel in the hopes that it will get his students interested in reading the classic tales of Edgar Allan Poe. He has seen in recent years that less and less of his students are familiar with these stories penned more than 150 years ago.

Mascia has written a thrilling story which interweaves many of these tales, including The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, Annabell Lee, and The Fall of the House of Usher, into a single story. He believes that telling these tales through a visual medium will get many students more excited about reading these once popular stories. The project is called The Poe Murders, and will likely inspire many young adults to rediscover these classic tales.

Mascia has started a campaign on IndieGoGo.com in order to raise funds for this expensive endeavor. He has estimated that it will cost close to $7,000 to hire an artist for the book and to have the books printed. He is offering those who contribute to the project rewards such as copies of the completed book and having the contributor drawn into the book as one of the characters.

If successful, copies of The Poe Murders will be donated to each of the libraries, middle-schools and high schools in Charles County to start. How far the reach will go from there is anyone’s guess.

Mr. Mascia is hopeful that the graphic novel will excite the minds of young people and to bring new life into the tales of old. If he is successful with The Poe Murders, he plans on going on to other classic fiction and making them new again as well.
