Turnabout

The door creaked. They managed to enter without waking him. Breaths tautly held, the children tiptoed through shadows, reaching the room where he sawed wood in a heavy doze. The pair knelt, alert for groaning springs or any fluctuation to the raucous chainsaw rumble as he dreamt of pleasant mayhem. The kids crawled toward the mattress, taking a huge chance, risking their lives on a whim. Easing below its frame, they lay panting in anticipation. A snort resounded above them. A fearful gasp of surprise. The monster sensed their presence and leaned to peer, wide-eyed, under his bed.
