The Altar of Bones

By Sheldon Woodbury

It clawed up from its underworld prison through the maze of scorched tunnels and caverns to the devastated surface of the planet above. Its banishment had lasted for endless eons, an eternity of agony, but now it was free. Its gargantuan black orbs glared out at the craggy valleys and withered peaks, all smothered with crumbling skulls and soot covered skeletons, a glorious nightmare come true. It let out an ashen roar because it finally had what it had always deserved, a colossal altar of cosmic death, spinning in the heavens for all to see.
