Outsmarting the Shadows

By Russ Bickerstaff

The shadows slice through the reverse geometry of respiration. Walk the streets in the day and they mockingly follow everything, but if you see them at night, you’ll notice the little inconsistencies. They move ever so slightly out of synch for the briefest fraction of a respiration. Blink and they’re back to normal. They only snap back to normal when you look for them. I think I’ve outsmarted them, though. They’re only a problem if you’re looking at them or looking away from them. I let my eyes out of my head. Can’t look anywhere now. They can’t bother me.
